What Is Allergic Contact Dermatitis?

I took my dog Jordan to the vet yesterday, he is an American Staffordshire Terrier/Rottweiler Mix, and the vet told me he has allergic contact dermatitis. The doctor just told me it was rare to see in dogs, and that was all. Can somebody tell me what allergic contact dermatitis is? Jordan is a great dog and I feel very sorry for him. I adopted him from the humane society when he was just a puppy. They told me he was a lab mix, but as he got older it was obvious he was not. He is all brown with white on his neck and chest, and weighs in at 110 lbs. The vet told me that he was most likely a Amstaff/Rottie Mix. Anyway, could somebody explain to me what allergic contact dermatitis is? I tried looking online, but I really didn’t get much good information, and very little relating to dogs.

Short answer is he is having allergic reaction to something he is coming in contact with like grass, dye in carpeting etc. Unless your vet did a skin allergy test to see exactly which things your dog is allergic, I wouldn’t put too much faith into it yet. If you haven’t, that is the next step so hopefully you can minimize the exposure to your dog.

The only hard part with contact allergies is identifying the source which can be almost anything. Probably the two most common would be a flea collar and wool (like a blanket or rug that the dog lays on.
Where on the body is the dog being affected? Contact dermatitis is normally very localized to a specific aria of contact with the allergen.
ie if it’s on the feet, the allergen is something that the dog is walking on. Around the neck, look at it’s collar. On it’s sides, look at it’s beading.
