back when my son was 8 weeks they put him on soy formula because of his constant lose and runny (water) diapers. when he turned 1 we were given the ok to do whole milk and he was fine for a while but know that he is 18 months he has had lose to a pudding texture bowel movements for a month know . so at a recheck today on his thrush i was told to go back to soy milk and he also has a rash that i was told was contact dermatitis.
is it possible for him to be intolerant to the lactose and then be fine with it and then not be able to digest it again. or could it be a allergy because of the rash and the runny poop and the thrush.
i didn’t seem to think about asking all of this until i got back home.

Yes this happens. My son was the same way. While nursing, I had to go off all milk products and then he went onto soy milk. I switched to whole milk a little after a year and it seemed fine at first, but then started giving us trouble again. The doctor said sometimes once it ‘builds up’ in the body it starts acting up again. We switched back to soy. He is now almost 5 and though he does fine when he uses milk products, he prefers the soy so he doesn’t use a lot and I don’t know if it would give him the same trouble it did when he was younger. Good Luck!

I would say….call a nurse hotline! Or make another appointment. Maybe it is a different food you are feeding him? Some kind of cheese, or something? My daughter is 9 months and is allergic to dairy, not deathly allergic but its still bad. So I have to check all the ingredients in EVERYTHING including baby food sometimes they sneak something in there. Also, you could put cortisone on the dermatitis, my baby girl has eczema so I use that SPARINGLY but it should take it away at least for a little while and if it comes back you should ask the doctor what else you could do for him.

My daughter was allergic to cow’s milk at 6 weeks, she drank soy formula and never drank whole milk or she would have a horrible tummy ache or diarrhea. We started whole milk, but she couldn’t tolerate it, so we swtiched to 2% which seemed to do the trick. Try the 2% or even 1% before buying soy milk. He will still get all the vitamins as in whole milk, but not the fat content. Good luck to you

Yes it is possible. A friend of mine went through the same thing with her son. he too had to go back on soy. He’s 3 now and cannot eat any dairy. He does well with veggie cheese, but yes, he went back on soy. I know it is strange, but true.

Sounds more like an allergy. Even at 18 months it would be VERY unusual for a child to be lactose intolerant. (Nature assumes that babies will be breastfed for the first few years, so babies/young children are essentially never lactose intolerant.)
