I recently had a major haircut. I had my chin length bob cut down to about an inch or two of hair to remove the relaxed hair since I wanted to grow my natural hair out again. I have done this before about a year ago with much longer hair with no issues. Scalp and hair were fine that time around.
This time, immediately as the clippers began going through my hair, my scalp began to feel irritated and itchy. But I attributed it to not being a hair cut regular. Now a week later my scalp is still irritated and itchy. Very sore and I can barely sleep because my hair is also so dry and brittle when I press my head to the pillow it hurts and itches more. I haven’t been scratching it for about 4 days and my head is still as sore as it was when I got it cut. I put in the same oil and leave in conditioners I used once before, and nothing is working. I also visited the RediClinic, where the nurse prescribed Nizerol and a steroid. She said she wasn’t sure if it was contact dermatitis or a fungal infection, but knew from examination it wasn’t lice. Haven’t tried the steroid yet, but no luck with the shampoo. When she examined my head she said it was very flaky. And although I have had a flaky scalp forever (without these current issues) I also tried T Gel and Selsom Blue “just in case”, no luck.
I don’t know what to do now. My natural hair has never been this dry before, and my scalp never, ever, ever felt so miserable. I just can’t fathom how a haircut could cause such damage or what I can do to feel better and get my hair a little less straw-like…
Maybe blunt clippers???
Thanks to anyone and everyone for their help.

I am sooooo sorry. They used extremely dull blades on your hair. If their clipper blades had been sharp and well cared for the clippers would have glided through your hair with no more than a tickling sensation. I wonder too if they hadn’t been sterilized. I can’t think of another reason for the sensitivity to still be around. Try the steroid and see if it makes a difference. If not see a dermatologist. Try putting a hot oil treatment on your hair. Start with clean damp hair apply the hot oil, wrap your hair in plastic and wrap a warm wet towel around your hair. Keep re-heating and applying the warm towels for 30 minutes then lightly shampoo your hair with a MILD baby shampoo, then condition as usual.
I would head back into the salon with doctor bills in hand, they should be paying for every cent of treatment, refund your hair cut and pay for pain and suffering. I’m not kidding if they refuse take them to small claims court.
I’m sorry but there is no excuse for such poor work!
    Good luck sweetie!

You may have had an allergic reaction to the shampoo, or worse, you may have lice. Try Head and Shoulders. I use it every other hair washing, because I live in the desert, and that means dry skin and scalp. Also, you don’t have to wash your hair every day. That could also be damaging your skin and drying out your scalp. I know this sounds gross, but I have a Mexican girl friend that swears by this (think Salma Hayek with long black hair here): she puts olive oil in her hair every other week, and a shower cap over it, then goes to sleep. I know that is extreme, but it couldn’t hurt! Just make sure your scalp isn’t irritated if you try that. She has the most amazing hair…like a model! If you keep having issues, you really need to get checked out by your doctor.
