The shelter told me to keep my 10 week old puppy indoors for another 2 weeks as she has to get the rabies vaccine. She also has mild dermatitis, and her skin apparently itches and causes her to scratch herself. She sometimes goes to the door and sits there wagging her tail, looking at me as if she wants to go outside. I can’t see how she would get rabies without coming into contact with other animals. Are there other reasons why she shouldn’t be outside yet? I’m wondering if walking her on the grass in my backyard would harm her. I want to do what’s best for her.

just like human babies, you are advised to keep dog babies inside until they have finished all of their vaccines; it’s not just rabies but there are other things that, just because they are still so little, they might be susceptible to. really, what’s the rush? if they told you to keep her inside, keep her inside. why would you want to challenge it? better safe than sorry. yes it’s probably ok to take her into your backyard, very briefly, for potty-training purposes, but i wouldn’t at all if it could be avoided. the potty-training can wait too.

A dog is not supposed to get a rabies shot until at least 4 months. Your pup is only 10 weeks so you have another month until you are supposed to have that done. The backyard would be fine for her. just don’t go where there are too many other dogs.
Also try changing foods or something called K9 Showstopper. Certain dog foods cause skin problems.
K9 Showstopper helps with bones and skin problems and several other things its supposed to be amazing but I don’t know how old you can start them on it.

There’s no reason she can’t go out in your yard to do her business. This is a good time to teach them, especially if she’s sitting at the door asking to go out.
You should limit her exposure to other animals before her rabies series is complete. Even more so if there is a rabies issue in your area.
Another concern the shelter may have had is her dermatitis. This could be caused by grass sensitivity and the shelter had concerns for her being in the grass. If that’s the case, she can still enjoy a quick trip outside for relief.

you mustn’t let an unvaccinated puppy outside where strange dogs have been. they can pick up any sort of disease.
however, if your backyard is fenced-in, clean, safe and off-limits to any strange animals, then that’s fine! (: she can be outside as long as you’re sure there’s no risk of her catching anything. (like NO walking on sidewalks, random parks, et cetera. you may CARRY her through such places.)

    Hi
Rabies is quite unlikely. The real concern would be Parvo. If you have a fenced area where other dogs have not been, it should be safe.
I’m assuming you are taking her to the Vet in 2 weeks. Do not put her down anywhere, except a disinfected exam table when at the Vet’s. After all, that’s where sick dogs go.
    Best of luck.

There are other diseases, but rabies is NOT something to messa round with. You never know when a squirrel will show up in a flash and bite your dog. It is unlikely that this would happen, but rabies is so nasty that you really jsut don’t want to risk it. I would talk to your vet first, they should see her soon anyways.

  7. Lioness says:

It’s not just rabies. Parvo is a nasty, nasty disease and you don’t want your puppy exposed to parvo or other diseases like it. I wouldn’t say she can’t go outside at all, but no wondering around in areas you don’t know are safe. And NO trips (especially to pet stores).

I was told that parvo could be anywhere on the floor. if you haven’t had parvo w/any dog in your house, than the dog would be fine in your yard, but make sure you are not expose to any other animal, because you can become in contact with parvo and than transmitted to your dog even with your shoes, and if you have clean your shoes wash your hands etc just to make sure

She will be fine. When you let her outside stay with her and keep an eye on her. If she has a skin irritation just keep an eye on her. When you come in just wipe her down with a damp cloth just to be safe it may help in getting anything off that may irritate her skin more.

  10. me says:

i’d say there could no harm be done. when we had baby dogs we made a cage thing at a door so they could go outside if they wanted to, and inside if they wanted to. other wise were does it go to do it’s things.just make sure that there arn’t tiks or so where you want her to go.(and not in the rode)

  11. CRStardu says:

Parvo is the killer of young puppies….keep her inside until she completes her vaccines…there are no exceptions with Parvo.http://www.workingdogs.com/parvofaq.htmhttp://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?…
A link to Parvo virus information.

  12. Z says:

Take her out on a leash to potty train her only, and take your shelter’s advice to get the rabies vaccine.
You can’t always prevent contact with an animal that carries rabies. Why risk it?

  13. Jamaican says:

Well i heard that when they jus born you cant let them go outside for 10 days but i think it will be fine

  14. Angela says:

Oh yeah, going into the backyard won’t hurt her. Just don’t take her for walks in public yet.

  15. Victoria says:

    Let her go outside!
My puppy will be 2 months the 14th and hes already going outside.. (well most of the time)
    let her outside.
the earlier the better she wont be frightend as much unless..

  16. Desoto says:

Call your vet and ask his opinion

  17. cheahhh says:

letting it in your backyard will be fine..
you just dont want it going where other dogs have been
