Ear Infections And Dog Not Responding When Called?

My my 7 year old female Bichon’s (Claudette’s) ears had been bothering her a little so we brought her to the vet and she had ear infections in both ears. We were given medication for her ears to help them and she’s been given the drops since last Wednesday and we’ll stop on Friday. Well, ever since about last Friday she’s not acting herself. She has stopped begging for food which she used to do. It seems like she’s having a hard time hearing. Today I went in the driveway, and usually she’s at the door and she wasn’t. She was laying on my parents bed on the other side of the house, looking at me like “when did you get here?!” I’m worried that she’s losing her hearing. Could the ear drops be doing this? I figured with her begging for food she’d be able to smell what we’re eating, too. We’ve been giving her 250 mg of Cephalexin two times a day, a generous amount of Tri-Otic ear drops into each ear twice a day, and we’ve been washing her every day with Etiderm. (She also has dermatitis at the moment.) She is, like I said, 7 years old and weighs roughly 25 pounds. She IS going to the vet July 11th for a checkup, but if she gets worse the vet WILL be contacted. We love her and we don’t mess around if she’s not healthy.

She’ll just be a little bit hard of hearing because of the drops. It’ll improve when the treatments over. Don’t be reluctant to carry on, it always happens to animals on ear drops, a bit like it does with humans. She is probably not herself because she is in pain as ear infections are painful as you will probably know.

No, the meds won’t be making her lose her hearing. I’d be concerned that she had her ear infection for too long and it’s damaged her hearing. Did the vet say anything about that? If you’re concerned, you need to phone the vet and tell him what’s going on – he won’t charge you for a phone call and it could set your mind to rest.

Don’t leave this until July 11. Phone your vet and take his advice. Could be this ear infection is more serious than he first thought.

You know your dog better than any of us, so if her behavior continues to worry you, I would not wait for appointment.

She could be going deaf, or her ears may be a little sore from the infection.

Are you cleaning her ears out with cotton balls and solution, or just using the drops? It could be that she’s not feeling well. I’d call the vet and tell them. Maybe get a 2nd opinion.
My dog had a BAD ear infection when we got her. Both her ears (but esp. the right one) were impacted with dirt, wax, and puss. We had to clean them out daily for a week and now we do it weekly. She actually really enjoys it (she leans her head into it and relaxes like I’m “hitting the spot” lol). It got rid of her infection, and she ended up w/o much if any hearing loss. My mother-in-law’s Bichon had impacted ears before too. Not fun.
