I was wondering if I can get Contact Dermatitis from my pet rat? I have have this weird rash, and googled reactions and found pictures of something called Contact Dermatitis. And I was wondering if I can get that from a reaction to my rat. I also just got my rat not that long ago.

All contact dermatitis is would be an skin allergy to the rat, and yes you can get that. Rats groom themselves, and the saliva dries on their fur. That, and when they stick you with their toenails if they crawl around on you will make you itch and break out.

Hmmm .. When my sister was little she also got dermatitis. It was first an enflamed rash & then the skin from her hands peeled off. I think you would be able to get it from a pet rat .. It’s nothing to worry about, just mouisturise your hands regularly.

Contact dermatitis is a generic term which refers to an inflammatory reaction of the skin when it comes in contact with some type of irritant whether chemical or allergic. These can be idiopathic (meaning from out of nowhere and random) but are usually due to previously undiagnosed allergies to whatever. I frequently see patients in the ER who come in wanting to know what they’re allergic to, but the reality is only they can answer that question since they have to make the list of the things they’ve contacted in their environment. As to whether it’s a simple dermatitis or something else there would have to be more details. I do recommend you see a dermatologist, but if the rat is new, followed by the rash, then most likely that is it.

i have that. [allergic to fake metals,i.e.buttons on pants and stuff] its pretty much eczema. you should probably get rid of your rat. we have rats and my mom is allergic to them so she has little spots from them. theres also a cream you can get from the doctors to get rid of it.

I have contact dermatitis and it sounds like you have it too.
Go to see your doctor, who will most likely prescribe some form of hydro cortisone which will clear it right up.
It’s definitely nothing serious and you should be able to keep your rat, so don’t worry.
