Can anyone identify this rash?

My two year old hasn’t run fever or even complained of itching. I’ll catch her scratching at it here and there and I’ll ask her if it itches and she always says no. She fell in the mud while we were on a walk and got her jeans all muddy. I noticed a little irritation after that. I started using a new dryer sheet and noticed that I was also getting these tiny little randomly scattered bumps so I immediately threw those out. My little bumps went away but hers continued to spread and now they’ve turned into a red patchy rash. She still has the little specked red dots here and there. Is this just some kind of contact dermatitis? I keep putting hydrocortisone on it and I’ve given her zantac but neither seem to be doing much. Thanks!

Looks like hives to me. You could try giving her some benadryl… but it will make her sleepy so do it before bed time. That might clear it up right away. If it doesn’t go away a few days after it started, give the doctor a call and see if there’s anything else to do. Good luck!

It certainly appears to be an eczema rash, possibly either an irritant or an allergic one. There does seem to be a “lacy” component to it,though, but I’m still sticking to the eczema diagnosis. You might want to change to a hydrocortisone OINTMENT, rather than a cream, and see if that helps. If not, have her dermatologist or pediatrician take a look.

Children can suddenly develop allergies to things that they didn’t have a problem with before. You got rid of the new dryer sheets… did you rewash everything she touches that was washed/dried with those sheets? If not, she is still exposed to it. If I were you, I’d start from scratch and try buying a new laundry detergent for sensitive skin (like a baby detergent) and rewash everything that may have been washed in the old detergent & with the old dryer sheets (clothes, socks, underwear, sheets, blankets, jacket, teddy bears, etc). Skip dryer sheets with her clothes – the baby detergent will keep everything soft – you don’t need them and it is just another thing that could be causing irritation.
If that doesn’t help, try eliminating something else you use, like shampoo, etc. Keep switching things that you use with/on her for a while and see if it gets better. If nothing helps, call the doctor.
