Metal/Makeup Allergies + Tattoo?
Posted by: Alan in Contact Dermatitis, tags: Allergies, Metal/Makeup, Tattoo
Like a lot of other people on this site, I have metal allergies (Chromium, cobalt, and nickel) and i’m thinking about getting a tat. From the answers i see, having metal contact dermatitis doesn’t mean you’ll have a reaction to the tat – i’m just wondering if anyone’s had any experiences like mine. My allergies also extend to the point where I can’t wear eyemakeup with any of the above (especially chromium) as an ingredient, or my eyes will swell shut. I’m just thinking that if there’s such a negative reaction from having the dyes near my eyes, having it injected into my skin might not go so well. Thoughts? Experiences? Just looking to pick someones brain! Thanks!

Well, many people are allergic to nickel, it isn’t a common additive to tattoo ink (meaning legit tattoo ink shouldn’t contain any), but cobalt and chromium are much more rare allergies, and may be of concern.
My best advise to you, is to pop into the local shop that you wish to be tattooed at, inform the artist of your allergies, and have him/her look up the ingredients of the ink. If the information isn’t on the packaging, metallic content at least, should be available by calling the company which makes the ink.
You can probably have a tattoo, you’d just have to be careful with tattoo ink, and that’s definitely something your artist can help you with. It may be as simple as avoiding certain colors. I’d venture a guess to say you’d have problems with reds maybe, and blues probably.
