Do you think Proactive would work on a 12 year old boy with eczema?

This kid has eczema and has had it all his life. They say theres no sure fire cure, you just simply grow out of it. His doctor said to try Proactive.

daughter has eczema and I’m not sure of the extent of yours by any means but i use a dry skin moisturizer on her two to three times a day and that seems to help with the “rash” that comes up. i never heard of proactive for it but if your Dr recommends it you might want to give it a try

find a lotion rich in aloe and vitamin E. It is dry skin, not acne.

Proactive is for treatment of acne, not for eczema. I find it very odd that the doctor suggested proactive.. you may need to find another dermatologist for more consultation.

Eczema isn’t acne…it’s a dry skin condition. Often kids grow out of it, I had it as a child and now I do not. Usually a doctor will prescribe a topical cream or recommend lotions like eucirin (sp?). That’s strange he recommended Proactive, it seems that would aggrivate his eczema more than help it. Did he refer you to a dermatologist or suggest that?

Proactiv will not work. Your son’s problem isn’t excess oil and all Proactiv is is a mild benzoyl peroxide, with some buffering ingredients and good publicity.
I would suggest that he starts with a food allergy screening. He stops eating one particular type of food for one or two weeks to see if anything changes. If something changes, he eliminates that from his diet. For instance, week one he could eliminate all wheat products, week two all alliums (onions, garlic, etc), week three tomatoes and potatoes (nightshade family), etc.
Another thing that helps my eczema is kaolin clay or a clay mask (not one that is moisturizing though). Leave this on the affected areas at least until dry, and the longer the better. Clay gently extracts oils from the skin (which can cause the eczema) without damaging the skin itself.
B-12 cream is a new and not widely available for treatment of eczema which shows a good deal of promise.

Your doctor said try proactive? Proactive is for acne… But I guess if your doctor said so.
My son suffers from eczema and he is only 12 months old. He’s had breakouts all over his body when winter came. I use cetaphil lotion twice a day on him, and it helped. The number one answer to eczema is to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. I also suffer from eczema and yeah, there’s really no cure. It’s only manageable.
