Workplace research provides evidence to suggest that involving workers has a positive effect on health and safety performance. Equally, there is strong evidence that unionised workplaces and tthose with health and safety representatives are safer and healthier as a result.” However, There is no evidence that just consulting employees has any similar impact to the marked “union effect” on health and safety. And it is unlikely that it will. Any representative that is not appointed through their union will not have access to independent support and will be totally dependent on their employer for training and information. If an employer decides to “consult” with their workforce on an issue such as a new method of risk assessment, the individual workers are not going to be in a position to challenge anything the employer says. Without access to independent advice the “consultation” is not only meaningless, it can be dangerous. It allows the employer to say that they have consulted their staff while in reality they have simply informed the staff. When consultations do take place in workplaces without safety representatives it can be on very important issues, workers have to accept at face value any assurances that the choice they are being given is all that is available, rather than just the cheapest. In a unionised workplace a safety representative would have been trained, would be able to seek support from their union and, often would have contacts with other representatives

Visit savantmd.com for more health tips and videos or follow us on http Hi I’m Dr. Regina Sih, Pharmacist for SavantMD.com; Welcome! Today’s health tip is on Bedbugs. Recently in the news Bedbugs are back and have been creating problems in New York, Philadelphia, and Kentucky. Due to increased travel, immigration, and pesticide resistance these critters are creating an infestation problem. Bed bug bites can appear in several ways. Some people react with a red bump ranging from a few millimeters to 1 centimeter. The bites can be extremely itchy and can lead to infections especially in patient’s who have a weak immune system, such as diabetics. Some people are very sensitive to these bites and can develop severe hives or swelling. In these more serious reactions, I recommend to follow-up with your health care provider. So what can you do to alleviate the itchy symptoms? You can try over-the-counter corticosteroid creams, such as cortisone, or oral antihistamines, such as loratadine. Avoid topical diphenhydramine also known as Benadryl which may cause an allergic skin reaction called contact dermatitis. www.savantmd.com www.savantmd.com This video was produced by SavantMD Inc. © Copyright 20010 SavantMD Inc.
