Question by cece: Ketosis or low-carb diet causes eczema/hives?
Has anyone else experienced this?

I have been suffering from some sort of hives/eczema for the past few months. I have seen the dr., who couldn’t name a cause but prescribed me prednisone for immflamation. It went down, but started right back up when I finished the prescription.

I’ve kept a careful food/activity/stress journal to try and pinpoint the cause, and the ONLY consistent thing I can find is that it flares up at night, sweating can make it worse, and it gets worse the deeper in ketosis I am.

I have done low-carb for a few years now because my body is very sugar sensitive. A few days ago I went on a short junk food spree- back to eating burgers, sweets, etc, and the eczema on my forehead/around my eyes cleared up. Now I think I am in ketosis (or near) and overnight, the eczema has exploded on my face again.

Anyone have any experience with this? I really do NOT want to have to gorge myself on carbohydrates to clear my skin, I am pre-diabetic as it is, and sugar makes me slow & nearly unable to function at times.

I can’t really answer your question, but I can relate a personal anecdote.

When I was younger, I had severe eczema. The doctors put me on a low-protein diet, and it got much, much better.

Low-carb diets are known for causing skin problems in people who have a predisposition for such.

Question by Kris: Eczema & stomach problems – Dairy Wheat? Diet?
I am 27 years old. I have had terrible eczema my entire life, asthma since 15 and stomach problems gradually getting worse over the past few months? Can these all be related? Is it common for dairy, wheat, …or anything to make these worse or have caused them? I’m at wits end with all them. They all seem to be getting worse and my prescription meds for them (Triamcinolone, Protopic, Olux-E, Advair, Albuterol and occasionally Prednisone) do not seem to be controlling them anymore…I really need some answers from people who have experienced this 1st hand or a doc or nurse. Should I be on a dairy/wheat free diet? Please Help!!!
Thank you all so much for your time ….
I just want to be healthy and in control of whats going on here!

You might be in the one percent of the population that has celiac disease or dermititis herpetiformis or both. I will add a bunch of websites for you to look at.

The first thing you should do is get a doctor to test you for celiac disease and dermititis herpetiformis which are both gluten intolerance conditions. Celiac disease affects the small intestine and can cause any number of symptoms including yours. Dermititis herpetiformis causes skin problems similar to eczema. The tests will start with blood work and then possibly an endoscopic exam of your small intestine(not a very difficult thing to go through) and also skin biopsies.

After you get tested and it turned out positive, the treatment will be a gluten free diet which eliminates all wheat, barley and rye from your diet and some people are sensitive to oats also.

If the tests are negative or inconclusive, then go on a 2-3 month trial gluten free diet to see if your symptoms go away. This will eliminate the possibility that you are non celiac gluten intolerant or allergic to wheat or gluten that didn’t show up in testing. It is important to get the testing done before you stop eating gluten or you could get false negatives.

I had most of your symptoms for a long time and found out when I was 50 that I had celiac disease and within 3 months of going gluten free, I was able to stop my claritin, Advair, Albuterol, Medrol and it seems like one other. Anyway it was wonderful and well worth not eating gluten containing foods.

The dairy issue may resolve itself when you go gluten free since celiac disease seems to affect the parts of your small intestine that digest lactose. After you have healed, you may find yourself tolerating dairy again. In the meantime, limit your lactose intake or take a pill with meals called Lactaid. You can get it at a drug store without a prescription.

This is a lot of info but feel to contact me through here and good luck.

Question by fenman/fenwoman: Does anyone know a cure to help Nummular Dermatitis? It is a type of eczema.?

Best answer:

Answer by Rusty
The main cause of eczema is overreaction of the immune system. Identifying certain foods, chemicals, etc can be very helpful in battling this disease. I try to avoid soy and milk products which trigger my flare-ups.
After using number of prescription drugs I’ve turned to the natural treatments.
Now I use herbal remedies from serenaskin.com, which aim at the root of the disease – the immune system, and are steroid-free.
After about 2 weeks of using ointment and spray my skin has been cleared up and now I just continue with anti-eczema extract, which controls the immune system. My skin has been clear for months now.
It is the only treatment I have found that provides me complete relief when I use it as directed.
