Workplace research provides evidence to suggest that involving workers has a positive effect on health and safety performance. Equally, there is strong evidence that unionised workplaces and tthose with health and safety representatives are safer and healthier as a result.” However, There is no evidence that just consulting employees has any similar impact to the marked “union effect” on health and safety. And it is unlikely that it will. Any representative that is not appointed through their union will not have access to independent support and will be totally dependent on their employer for training and information. If an employer decides to “consult” with their workforce on an issue such as a new method of risk assessment, the individual workers are not going to be in a position to challenge anything the employer says. Without access to independent advice the “consultation” is not only meaningless, it can be dangerous. It allows the employer to say that they have consulted their staff while in reality they have simply informed the staff. When consultations do take place in workplaces without safety representatives it can be on very important issues, workers have to accept at face value any assurances that the choice they are being given is all that is available, rather than just the cheapest. In a unionised workplace a safety representative would have been trained, would be able to seek support from their union and, often would have contacts with other representatives

Dr. Wendy Levinbook, MD discusses Dermatitis Herpetiformis Treatment. See more at www.dermnet.com PLEASE RATE AND COMMENT!!! Treatment with sulfones such as dapsone or sulfapyridine provide dramatic relief from the symptoms of dermatitis herpetiformis within hours to a few days of treatment initiation. In fact, dramatic improvement following the administration of these medications can be used to support the diagnosis of this disorder. Both drugs control, but do not cure the disease. Dapsone is the first choice of the two as it tends to be more effective. In addition, strict adherence to a gluten-free diet for at least 6 months will improve the intestinal and the skin lesions and will allow most patients to begin a decrease in sulfone therapy. However, the diet has to be followed for many months (often 2 years) before medications can be discontinued. Symptoms and lesions may recur in 1 to 3 weeks if a normal diet is resumed. Current evidence indicates that a gluten-free diet needs to be continued indefinitely and that it may be protective against gastrointestinal lymphomas. However, this diet is often difficult to sustain for long periods of time. An elemental diet (a diet without full proteins composed of free amino acids, carbohydrates, and small amounts of fats) may also provide significant improvement in skin disease activity, independent of gluten administration. However, similar to the gluten-free diet, an elemental diet is often difficult to maintain.
