Question by Lindsey: Discolored Skin from Contact Dermatitis?
Instead of darker skin though, the spots where i had the rash are lighter.
Can i tan to get rid of these?
I have pretty dark skin, and i’m still in treatment with the rash.
It was due to allergies, and they gave me steroid cream to use for two weeks

You have two reasons for having the lighter spots: the first one is “post-inflammatory hypopigmentation”, which frequently occurs after an inflammatory event, such as a dermatitis. In this sort of situation, the pigment granules are still being made, but the dermatitis is inhibiting the transfer of the granules from the pigment cells to the epidermal skin cells, and hence, the cells are arriving at the surface of the skin with less than a normal load of pigment granules. This situation will revert to normal, some time after the dermatitis has cleared. In addition, you are using a steroid cream, which also leads to blanching of the skin from having the blood vessels under the dermatitis become constricted. This condition will also heal up, once the cortisone is stopped.

Question by tiredbutwiredlove: Care for infant with Seborrheic Dermatitis?
My 11 week old has seborrheic dermatitis. A doctor filling in for my pediatrician had diagnosed it as eczema, but my pediatrician re-diagnosed it. Her recommendations were to wash her body and hair with Cetaphil and use Head and Shoulders on her hair twice a week. She also recommened Cetaphil lotion for the body. She has the dermatitis on her scalp, face, and ears, and sometimes breaks out on her chest and arms. I have just purchased some Aquaphillic ointment, which I had heard was great for eczema. Has anyone used this for an infant with seborrheic dermatitis also? Is there anything else that can be done besides what the doctor mentioned? Also, what could be causing it? I read that dermatitis doesn’t seem to be related to allergies, but it seems to get worse when I nurse her. We’ve already ruled out a milk allergy. Any thoughts? Also – any oatmeal products make the condition worse. She said we could try a mild steroid product if the above measures didn’t work.
