Question by Arianna’s Mommy: FLEAS! HELP PLEASE!!!?
We went away last weekend and normally I take our dog Tyco everywhere with us, but because we are still working on his jumping problem, I had to leave him with “friends” as my step-dad just had surgery and I couldn’t risk Tyco jumping on him.

When I returned Monday to pick my baby up, he was scratching like mad. Well, I rolled him over onto his back, his entire chest, belly, groin, armpits and neck are flea bitten and bright red! I’ve seen fleas and their bites before, even seen flea allergy dermatitis with our dog growing up, but this is different. He is bright red on his belly, actually looks like he’s burned! I called the moronic “friends” who dogsat for us and they told me he flea dipped him. GRRRRRRRRR I NEVER EVER EVER use the dips, powders, shampoos, sprays, collars….I know they are toxic. I stupidly believed that fleas weren’t an issue in our area and didn’t think twice about sending him to stay with these people. STUPID STUPID ME!!! I’m so angry with myself for not using a preventative on him! I attempted to contact the clinic we use, because I recently lost my job and no way can I afford to take him to the area vet, well, they have no appointments until next week, so I scheduled the appointment.

In the meantime, I couldn’t bare to watch him suffer, so I went to Petco and bought Frontline Plus, cost me a fortune, but I knew I had no choice. I applied the Frontline Plus yesterday at 4 pm. He is definitely scratching less, but still scratching nonetheless and is now chewing at himself. I’m hesitant to use the bitter apple spray I’m afraid it will burn.

My question is…..a full 24 hours application, should he still be biting and scratching? I know obviously the bites are still there so they are going to itch, but he’s biting at himself, I’m afraid the Frontline isn’t working properly.
I forgot to add….I immediately bathed him when I found this on his belly with oatmeal bath, which seemed to reduce redness significantly. The rash is ONLY on his underside, I’ve thoroughly looked him over and he is not red anywhere but his underside, which is the only reason I felt it safe to use the Frontline. I bathed him a second time on Tuesday morning before I left to buy the Frontline (yes he was thoroughly dry before I applied it). And I’ve been applying aloe to his underside as well.

I too was thinking a reactiion to the flea dip, perhaps it wasn’t diluted properly or left on too long.
Dont’ tell me they aren’t toxic! 5 years ago, we used a powder on our dog and he went into seizures because of it!!! They ARE toxic and I will NEVER use them!
I WENT TO MY MOTHER’S HOUSE BECAUSE MY STEP DAD JUST HAD HEART SURGERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT THAT IT’S ANY OF YOUR BUSINESS!!!!!
The shelter I adopted him from has a clinic, we pay anually and visits are free, we just pay for vaccines and meds.
Why would I pay the vet 0 when I can see a vet free!?

Best answer:

Answer by ladystang
probably a reaction to the flea dip
i would have taken to groomer and had them give a good bathing to get rid of it.
putting frontline on probably made it worse.
get a cone and see if that helps.

What do you think? Answer below!

I’ve been suffering from contact dermatitis for a few weeks now and the only thing I can think of that’s new in my diet, environment, etc. is a current flea problem. I also sprayed my furniture with Hartz upholstery spray for fleas and that’s about when it started.
