Question by aiccata: Switching to formula for a little while, not sure if infant is having a reaction? Any advice?
I have been breastfeeding my 11 month old since birth. Recently, I’ve had to go on 2 medications, a very potent steroid for eczema and a blood thinner for a clotting prob. I am not comfortable giving my infant my breastmilk while on the medications. I hope to be off of them in about 4 weeks and then start up breastfeeding again. I have frozen over 2 gallons of medication free breastmilk, but he refusing the breastmilk now. I tasted the milk and it tastes terrible, like metal, and a laleche consultant said that I have too much lactic acid in my milk and freezing the breastmilk makes the lactic acid taste come out more. He will take a bottle with formula so we know it’s not a nipple or a bottle issue. So here’s the question about formula, he started on formula 2 days ago and today he has had 2 bowel movements with softer stools (not watery though). And, he has never had diaper rash but is getting a slight rash now. Do you think he is sensitive to the formula? Should I switch him to another brand/soy based or should I wait and give it some more time for adjustment? I spoke to our pediatrician before the switch and he gave me samples of similac advance so that’s what I’ve been giving him. The doc said that I should not give him cow’s milk yet until at least a year. My son is on the smaller side, he’s in the 25th percentile for weight and 15th percentile for height. Also, he does have eczema, like me and his big bro, but it’s under control right now. He has had some awful breakouts in the past but I switched soaps and that did the trick. But, when I was a baby I was allergic to dairy and soy so it runs in the family. Btw, he is eating solids and has had no negative reactions. As far as dairy goes, he’s already had cubed cheeses and yo baby yogurt with no issues. Thanks for any advice. I will calling the doc tomorrow but wanted to see if anyone had some thoughts. Please no judgement!!! I asked about formula a little while ago and some were critical towards me giving my son formula. I didn’t realize what a sensitive topic this was, and I guess I should of been more detailed with my first question. But, I was told that formula has no nutritional value and that doesn’t make any sense? Most mom’s do what’s best for their baby given their situation so let’s all play nice please :-)
When he had his bm’s I was holding him so I changed him immediately. And I used diaper cream on him as well.

yes i agree–you do what you have to do.

ok so i think you have to be careful about the formula. my baby is also sensitive and i give her breast milk as well as similac advance HA. HA (hypoallergenic)is the key here. as you know, formula is not perfect so it will take some getting used to. i think you should give this formula a try for a bit longer. he needs to adjust to it. and then hopefully you can start breast milk again if and when you stop the meds.

also, my baby also had eczema and we use physiogel. im in south africa, so im not sure if its called physiogel in the US but im sure its sold there and it happens to work really well. maybe you could ask a pharmacist about it.

Question by Sam S: My niece is having eczema since her childhood. What is the best creme/medicine to treat eczema?
My niece is having a really bad case of eczema since she’s a little kid. She’s 17 now and she still has it. She’s asking me what is the best creme or medicine to cure her eczema. I feel really bad for not able to answer her that. She went 2 doctors and they prescribed for her some anti-itching creme. However, after using the prescribed creme from the doctors, her skin has lot of white spots. So she’s afraid of using it. She have been using ucerine creme lotion, but it only helps a little bit. If you know any creme to prevent the itching and the flare-up of the skin, please let us know. Thank you.

Does having eczema boost your metabolism?

I have it. I also have very very bad dry skin. I would think that would lower my metabolism. Right?

If possible, how much would it boost my metabolism for the eczema part. I have full body eczema (not in patches), its not itchy or blistery type but just the fact my skin has a lot more layers of skin then normal people would.

It doesn’t affect anything. It just gets itchy at times. Is there any way to work around it? Will that be the DQ for enlisting?
