Question by Nici: Can anyone tell me the difference between otc Hydrocortisone and prescription Hydrocortisone Valerate?
Is VALERATE and ingredient? Is that what seperates the two?

Will long term use of both or either cause any side effects in small children??

My twins have eczema and these creams seem to do the best job. They are 2 yrs old now and have been using the creams for almost ALL of their lives. Some days it’s just spot treatment, other days we need to use it like lotion, because they are having a “whole body” reaction.

I am 41 and I have used hydro cortisone for years almost 40. The difference is the strength OTC only is 0.1% and Westcort the brand name for hydrocortisone w/VALERATE is 0.2%. Your best bet is to talk to the pharmacist about the two medications. Also as a child, I under went UV treatment and used a special soap, as well as a special diet. Many times they will out grown it and it will mainly be spot treatment as they get older. Mine was worse in the winter.

Question by TD: is it good to use hydrocortisone for infant eczema?

Best answer:

Answer by Lori R
Yes and No. My daughter has had eczema her whole life she is 3 now.

The doctor told us we can use a 1% hydrocortisone cream but to use it very thin and not to use it more than 2 times a day for 2 weeks at a time because it can thin the skin.

We used it for a while but it didnt help us. We have also tried prescription Hylra and Elidel. Elidel seems to work the best.

If its eczema you need to see a doctor. They can advice you on trying to figure out what triggers it and what things to avoid

Question by JennBill: what is the best treatment for eczema on and around the eyelids, besides hydrocortisone cream?
It goes away with hydrocortisone cream but i don’t want to keep using that since it is a type of topical steroid and your body can become dependent or immune to it.

Question by musiclover: Should i use hydrocortisone for eczema around my eyes?
I have eczema all around my eyes.
I’m wondering if it is safe for me to use hydrocortisone around them.
I’ve heard it has a little storoid type stuff in it and i’m worried it might soak into my eyes through my skin and damage my eyes. and i wouldn’t want that!
Do you think it would be safe?
